Moroccan born Canadian artist Othman Wahabi has established himself as a solid slide guitarist and a captivating singer-songwriter. Who is best known musically for combining traditional blues and other Afro-American music with sounds and melodies from his north and west African heritage.
His music is described as a transcending link between the east and the west, channeling elements from the traditional African music and its derivatives to create a uniquely mystical and evocative sound. Lyrically Othman tends to focus on spirituality and conscious topics. Some common themes in his music are unity, peace, racism, poverty, and the need for redemption.
Born in Casablanca, Morocco in 1983 and based in Montreal, Canada since 2005. He grew up listening to the blues, jazz, rock, reggae and west African music that his father a long time music lover played in the house. He picked up the guitar at the age of 13 and began performing regularly with KEOPS. One of the first heavy metal bands in Morocco. He was also the lead singer guitarist for the short lived blues rock band Voodoo. But it is after moving to Canada in 2005, that Othman started focusing heavily on the organic sound of the slide guitar, which eventually became his signature instrument. In 2014 He released few songs including a Robert Petway's cover called "Catfish Blues" that got over a million views on Youtube. The success from catfish Blues helped him make a name for himself among the international blues community. But it is his versatility as a musician and the way he is able to mix his African roots, with western influences together, that brought him positive reviews and an eclectic fan base that stretches beyond the scope of blues music.
In february 2023 he was invited by the MRC de la Matapedia to present his interactive project "Afrika Blues - Une Histoire Noire" as a celebation for the black history month. In April 2023 Othman became the co-founder of the ethno-jazz musical collective the Syndicat Des Troubadours. Playing 3 shows in New York city and currently working on a debut record.
